Klutzy and aging

I have always known I was a tad on the klutzy side. However, the extent to which my klutziness extends became painfully obvious this morning. I was wearing my old, stretched-out, too-wide platform slides this morning as I took my son to preschool (as I purchased new, cute, replacement shoes yesterday and was going to test them out in the office, so I couldn't wear them outside, yet). We always do this thing where he says, "I'm going to get you!" and I pretend to run away. It's cute and it gets him to speed up, so it's a double bonus. This morning, though, I was looking behind me as I "ran" and fell off my shoe. Really, I stepped on the outside of the footbed, but it was far enough over to cause the shoe to tip over sideways. I have done this numerous times before (as the shoes are too wide for my freakishly narrow feet), but have always landed on the sole of my foot, stumbled, and carried on, hoping no one saw me. This morning, however, I totally sprained my ankle falling off my shoe. What makes it even worse is the fact that I've already sprained this ankle so many times that I had ligament reconstruction surgery on it while I was in college (so I can actually hurt it again...). L laughed at me when I hobbled into work, and then very kindly got me an ice pack and a rubberband while I contemplated my sad state. I'm too young for this type of thing! This is the type of freakish injury that should take down the feeble and out-of-shape, not a 27-year-old who actually exercises on a semi-regular basis! The shoes weren't even that high, sadly enough, so I really have no excuse except a complete lack of coordination and/or balance and/or grace. :-(

That is really sad. I have had my klutzy moments too. I remember once in high school I tripped on the gym floor while walking and fell flat on my face. It seems impossible to trip on a completely smooth surface but I found a way to do it. Luckily I didn't sprain anything.
